Endurance
This series emerges from the stark, sun-bleached terrain of the Sahara, where the human figure is both dwarfed by and deeply embedded in the vastness of nature. Based on imagery from the Marathon des Sables — an ultramarathon across one of the planet’s most inhospitable environments — the paintings capture a different kind of heroism: collective perseverance, rhythm, and the physical vulnerability of movement over time.
The figures are abstracted, forming almost a pulse or current winding through the landscape. Distance compresses bodies into brushstrokes; individuals dissolve into color, shadow, and dust. The desert becomes not a backdrop but a living force — heat, distance, silence, glare — shaping the march. The terrain is painted with immediacy and physicality, as if scraped and swept by wind itself.
This is not a glorification of athleticism, but a meditation on endurance — as effort, repetition, and resilience. The viewer is invited into a perspective that hovers above and behind, suspended in the tension between awe and fatigue, scale and presence.
The series contemplates what it means to continue — to walk, to bear weight, to move together and apart.
It is a portrait not of individuals, but of enduring humanity.
